This policy explains what scopeish collects, who can see it, and how long it is kept. It is written to be read, not to be impressive.
scopeish is operated by Daniel Ahn, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Questions, requests, or complaints: support@scopevegas.com.
The short version
scopeish shows you the profiles of other people using the app who are physically near you, and shows your profile to them. To do that, the app needs your location, and other people near you will see the profile you created.
- Your phone number is used to sign you in. It is never shown to anyone.
- Your location is used to work out who is near you. Other people are never shown your coordinates, your address, or how far away you are.
- Your profile — name, photo, bio, links — is shown to people near you. That is the point of the app.
- Profiles stay visible for about 2 hours after you leave, then disappear.
What we collect
Your phone number. Collected when you create an account and used to send you a login code. It is stored in our authentication system, is not part of your public profile, and is not shown to other users.
Your profile. Your display name, profile photo, and anything you choose to add: a short bio and links to your social media accounts. All of this is provided by you and all of it is intended to be seen by other users.
Your location. The app periodically sends your device’s GPS coordinates to our servers so we can determine which other users are within roughly 500 feet of you. This continues while the app is in the background, so you stay visible to people nearby after you put your phone away. It stops when you turn off location access for scopeish in your phone’s settings, or when you delete your account. If you allow location access only while using the app, it also stops when you force-quit the app or restart your phone, until you next open it. We store one current location per account, which is overwritten each time it updates — we do not keep a history of everywhere you have been.
Who you have been near. When you and another user are within range, we record that the two of you were near each other, and when. This is what powers the list of people you recently passed. These records are deleted after 2 hours — cleared automatically the next time your phone reports its location — and they are deleted outright when either account is deleted.
Your activity in the app. Stars you send, accounts you block, and reports you submit.
Basic technical information needed to operate the service, such as error logs from our hosting providers.
We do not collect your contacts, your photo library, your browsing, or advertising identifiers. We do not use tracking or advertising SDKs, and we do not sell your data to anyone.
What other people can see
This is the section worth reading twice, because it is the part that is different from most apps.
People within about 500 feet of you can see your profile — your display name, your photo, your bio and your links — for as long as you are near them, and for about 2 hours afterwards. They do not need your permission and they are not told your exact location, your address, or how far away you are. They see that you are nearby, and they see the profile you built.
They can see you even if you never interact with them. There is no matching step in this version of the app. Being in the area is what makes you visible.
Stars are anonymous. If someone stars you, you are shown that your total number of stars went up. You are never shown who sent it, and neither is anyone else. Be aware that if you are the only person nearby, a change in that number may be enough to guess.
People you block cannot see you, and you cannot see them, in both directions, immediately.
Your profile photo is stored on a public link. Anyone who has the direct web address of your photo file can open it, including after you replace it or block someone. We use unguessable file names so the address cannot be worked out from your account, but it is not a secret once shared. In the rare case described under “Deleting your account” below, it can also outlive the account itself. Do not upload a photo you would not want seen outside the app.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with the companies that run the service for us:
- Supabase — our database, login system, and photo storage.
- Twilio — sends the SMS verification code to your phone. They receive your phone number for that purpose.
- Apple and Google — distribute the app.
Each of these providers is bound to protect your information to the same standard as this policy, and to use it only to provide their service to us.
We may also disclose information if we are legally required to, or where we believe in good faith that it is necessary to prevent serious harm to someone.
How long we keep it
| What | How long |
|---|---|
| Your account, profile and links | Until you delete your account |
| Your current location | Overwritten each update; not kept as a history |
| Records of who you were near | Deleted after 2 hours, and when either account is deleted |
| Stars you sent | Until you remove them or delete your account |
| Blocks | Until you unblock, or delete your account |
| Reports you submit | Kept after your account is deleted, so that safety reports remain reviewable |
| Reports about you | Kept after your account is deleted, without your profile attached |
| A scrambled fingerprint of your phone number, on reports only | Kept with the report, so that deleting an account cannot erase a safety record |
Your choices
Location. The app cannot show you anyone, or show you to anyone, without location access. You can turn it off at any time in your device settings, which effectively stops you appearing to others.
Your profile. You can change your name, photo, bio and links at any time from the Profile tab, and remove anything you no longer want visible.
Blocking. You can block anyone from their profile or from the list of people nearby. Blocking is immediate and works in both directions.
Deleting your account. You can delete your account from within the app. This removes your profile, links, location, stars and encounter records, and deletes your photo from our storage.
If that photo deletion fails — a dropped connection at the wrong moment — we delete the account anyway rather than leave you with one you cannot remove. The photo file can then survive at its direct web address. Email us and we will remove it.
Two things are deliberately kept, and only on reports. Reports you submitted about other people, and reports other people submitted about you, are retained without any profile attached — otherwise deleting an account would erase the record of a safety problem, in either direction.
Those retained reports also carry a scrambled fingerprint of the phone number involved. It is produced with a secret key, it cannot be turned back into a phone number, and it is stored nowhere else in the app. Its only purpose is to let us see that several reports came from, or are about, the same phone even when the accounts have been deleted and recreated — which is how someone would otherwise wipe a history of reports, or file the same false report repeatedly from new accounts. Nothing about it is automatic: it does not block anyone, ban anyone or restrict signing up. It is context for a person reading a report.
Requests. If you want a copy of your data, or want it deleted and cannot access the app, email support@scopevegas.com and we will handle it.
Depending on where you live you may have additional rights over your personal information — including, for California residents, rights of access and deletion, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising them. We apply the same process to everyone: email us and we will do it.
Security
Access to profile data is restricted at the database level, so the app can only retrieve the profiles of people you have actually been near, rather than the whole user list. Records of who has been near whom, and reports, are not readable by any user of the app.
No system is perfectly secure, and we would rather say so than promise otherwise.
Children
scopeish is not intended for and may not be used by anyone under 18. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a minor is using the app, please report the profile in the app or email support@scopevegas.com and we will remove the account.
This website
This section is about scopevegas.com, not the app.
The website uses Google Analytics to count visits: which pages are viewed, where visitors arrived from (for example, a link on Instagram), their approximate location at the city or region level, and what kind of device and browser they use. Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser to do this. We use it only to understand how people find the site. It is not connected to any advertising account, and nothing it collects is linked to an account in the app.
The app itself does not use Google Analytics or any other analytics or tracking tool.
You can block these cookies in your browser settings, or use Google’s opt-out add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout. Google describes its own use of this data at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that materially affects you, we will update the date at the top and, where the change is significant, tell you in the app.
